Weaknesses: Wanda is brash, a horrid liar, easily distracted with humor, and overly competitive. She is especially vulnerable to traps due to the high speeds she travels at, and has an incredibly high metabolism, forcing her to eat a lot more often than the average person.
History: Over the past few years Wanda's popularity had risen dramatically, quickly becoming one of the most famous athletes in the country. This was due in large part to a consistent story that permeated the media throughout her rise. Born to an incredibly poor family in the worst part of New Haven, running had been Wanda's passion from a very early age. She trained tirelessly, perfecting her body with the hopes of someday representing her country in the Olympics; a dream that became more real than she could have possibly imagined when, at the young age of 19, she not only competed but brought home the gold medal in a record-setting 11 track and field competitions. Almost every word of the popular story of Wanda Wyatt, however, was a lie fabricated by the government.
In reality, Wanda spent the majority of her early childhood in a government laboratory. Early on the idea was to create a super-soldier with the perfect mixture of training and controlled doses of radiation. The program was cut, however, before they realized just how successful they were. It was retooled into a program to train 'ideal' athletes to distract the public, complete with fake backgrounds. In this new environment, Wanda learned to thrive. She led all of the voluntary workouts and exercises, constantly encouraging and helping any of the other athletes who needed it. Her enthusiasm and sparkling personality were, in the end, what convinced her trainers to let her compete in the Olympic games ahead of schedule, instead of waiting another 4 years.
During the months leading up to the Olympics Wanda found herself submersed into a whole new world. New foods, new sights, new sounds, and, most importantly to the young athlete, she discovered comedy. She had found things funny before, but nothing like what she was exposed to now in movies, stand-up shows, and late night talk shows. This early exposure sparked a love of jokes that would stick with her for years.
It was during the games she realized she was more than just an amazing athlete. As she found herself racing against the best in the world, women who, by all accounts, should beat her easily, she discovered something about herself. It was as if the world class competition flipped a switch in her mind, allowing herself to run faster than she had even dreamed.
The year after her record-setting performance was a whirlwind. The country was ecstatic about her athletic accomplishments, and in love with her innocent, happy personality. Between the endorsements, public appearances, building her new life, and experimenting with her new-found ability, she barely had time to sleep. Just as she started getting a handle on all of it, the government came to her with another request.
They had been keeping a close eye on her. They had to, since they couldn't allow her to go around talking about anything from her real past. When they realized what kind of power she had, they saw potential. While Wanda had performed far above their expectations athletically, track and field stars only got good public exposure every four years, and they have a limited shelf life. But a super hero? People were still talking about heroes from the last world war.
Wanda insisted on the name of her super identity, a pun which only she found hilarious. The costume was a design the government came up with, something they hoped would appeal to the masses. With inside tips from the government and the speed to get to crimes before any other heroes, she quickly became one of the country's most active and popular heroes.
